[I'd already forgotten how to watch Rivette. I need to remember to mentally note beforehand that Rivette, like Chantal Akerman, isn't someone I'm necessarily on the same page as, but from whom I receive an acceptable brand of pain. If a friend does nothing but offer contemptuous barbs, I'm going to reconsider the friendship now and then, but if the barbs are sufficiently witty or latently good-natured, the friend is still a worthy friend. Right? (Not a rhetorical question.) This is a loose analogy, though, because Rivette isn't insulting me; he's violently shaking me loose of my preconceptions. Boredom is something I've recently become more concerned with arming myself against, after having a week or so where I thought about nothing but my impending death. (This was after watching Hamaca Paraguaya.) Boredom lulls us into inactivity, making us less conscious of death and more dead. But of course, activity only has meaning because of these moments. Nonetheless, inactivity is something to be feared. So when Rivette insists on grappling with boredom, it's like he's using my deepest weakness to expand my consciousness. (This is why I used to dislike Freud: being exposed was too painful to endure even if it meant expansion. But I like Freud now.) The characters in L'Amour Fou aren't Bored; Rivette isn't Antonioni. But boredom is a driving force in their activity. It's the impetus behind not only the production of Andromache but the vagina Sebastien incises on the wall, not only his relationship with Claire but his impetuous fling with tomboyish Puck. The same thing that drives him to pursue beauty allows him to settle for less. Boredom isn't the film's subject. It's the film's center, its moral equalizer. Despite this revelation, I can't bring myself to love this. The most memorable passages of absurdity and poetry are too salient, a sign that the surrounding material is lacking. But I get the impression Rivette would be okay with that. The Art needs to stand out as Art. Most of these four hours are Life.]
